About the Author

Hannah Kirshner is author and illustrator of Water, Wood, and Wild Things. Her journalism on Japan’s food, crafts and nature has appeared in the The New York Times and The Atlantic, and on The World radio program and Proof podcast. She’s a been a Solutions Journalism Network Climate Initiative fellow, and winner of an International Gourmand award. She splits her time between Brooklyn, New York, Yamanaka Onsen, in Japan’s Ishikawa prefecture, where she connects visitors to local foodways and craftways through her kitchen atelier, Mokkei.
